KSC driving Economic Collaboration Discussions between Bruneian & Malaysian Investors

Key investors from Brunei and Malaysia are set to hold strategic discussions on potential areas of collaboration within the fast-moving Kenyalang Smart City (KSC) development.

Under the banner of the Brunei-Miri Economic Collaboration Session, a delegation of 30 notable business leaders and policymakers will join with their Malaysian based counterparts in a session focused on cross-border partnerships, infrastructure, digital innovation and sustainable urban development.

The initiative is the brainchild of the Premier of Sarawak, The Right Honourable Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, and aligns with
objectives of PCDS2030 to drive economic prosperity, social inclusivity and environmental sustainability. Notably, it is being initiated by the Mayor of Miri City and Pujut Adun, Adam
Yii Siew Sang.

KSC: A Catalyst for Miri’s Economic Transformation

The award winning KSC first made headlines when its Convention and Exhibition Centre was awarded first prize at the 2024 International Property Awards for the Mixed Use Architecture Category (Malaysia). Its credentials have been further enhanced with recent signings which will see the establishment of Fudan University’s Institutes of Integrative Medicine as well as a Research Centre within KSC itself.

The realization of the KSC, and the associated support of the Sarawak Government and Miri City Government, is creating a momentum which Brunei business leaders are closely monitoring. The investment potential from Brunei, coupled with the strategic opportunities KSC is presenting in northern Sarawak, are the catalyst for this economic collaboration session which promises undeniable benefits to the region and the associated communities.

Potential Benefits from the Brunei-Miri Economic Collaboration Session:

  1. Increased Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) – exploration of joint ventures in smart infrastructure, tourism, healthcare initiatives, clean energy, education, data centres
and innovation parks directly associated with KSC.
  2. Enhanced Cross-Border Trade – Potential streamlining of customs processes and the integration of digital trade platforms between Brunei and Miri as a result of
    improved economic ties.
  3. Tourism & Business Hub Synergy – The proximity and uniqueness of KSC’s integrated international standard touristic facilities and commercial services are immediately
relevant and appealing to Brunei’s affluent tourism and investment markets which currently do not have access to like-for-like components at home.
  4. The Sarawak My Second Home (S-MM2H) – The S-MM2H initiative is relevant to developers and end users interested in capitalizing on residential real estate opportunities within the KSC. S-MM2H presents a series of benefits and eligibility criteria that are superior to the national programme.
