MIRI (April 16): Sarawak’s ambitious Kenyalang Smart City (KSC) initiative in Miri is gaining momentum as a pioneering model of urban innovation – integrating smart technology, renewable energy, and sustainable infrastructure development.

The transformation project is anchored by a strategic collaboration between China Energy Engineering Group Guangxi Electric Power Design Institute (CEEC-GXED), a Fortune 500 global infrastructure leader, and Malaysian developer Imasa Dinasti Sdn Bhd.

Both parties formalised their partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to establish a dedicated green energy project that will exclusively power the smart city’s operations.

The signing ceremony took place at Miri City Hall today and was witnessed by Miri Mayor Adam Yii.

It was one of six MoUs signed by Imasa Dynasti, involving other notable Chinese firms such as Shandong Yutong Road and Bridge Group Co Ltd; Shandong Tianhua Industry Co Ltd; Shandong Dawang Energy Development Co Ltd; UBlok Advanced Materials Co Ltd; and Beijing Shenhui Construction Engineering Co Ltd.

According to Imasa Dynasti Chairman Teo Ah King, the strategic alliance reinforces KSC’s role as Sarawak’s flagship smart city under the Sarawak government Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.

The project will integrate cutting-edge Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and 5G technologies to create a seamlessly connected urban ecosystem.

It will also feature top-tier educational institutions, including a research and innovation centre established by The Institutes of Integrative Medicine of Fudan University.

“Beyond its technological infrastructure, KSC will also incorporate major cultural and business amenities such as the Kenyalang Convention and Exhibition Centre, a Performing Arts Centre, and Cultural Heritage Museum,” said Teo.

These facilities, he said, are expected to transform Miri into a hub for business, innovation, and cultural exchange in northern Sarawak.

Citing on Sarawak Premier’s vision for PCDS 2030, Teo emphasised that the project, paired with a smart urban design and global academic partnerships, would position KSC as a benchmark for sustainable urban development in the Asean region.

“By attracting global investment and fostering high-value employment opportunities, KSC is poised to drive Sarawak’s transition to a digital, low-carbon economy, while setting new standards for future urban developments,” he reiterated.

“This will create rewarding job opportunities for local communities and foster inclusive economic growth, while at the same time preserve cultural values and introduce a modern lifestyle that balances convenience with environmental consciousness.”
